As I thought more about this, I thought about Essex's rebellion and its supporters, whose vision of Elizabeth may have been something akin to the play's attitudes. And Catholicism? Dunno. I still can't find the date, but I have something that will give me a pretty good idea at home. In terms of politics, I do know that several plays praising (the late) Elizabeth appeared about eight years or so after her death.
