BUT we have to also consider Shakespeare's audience and its attitude to Marlowe at the time of the play. Perhaps they were ready for someone to out-do Marlowe in terms of "overreacher" plays. Perhaps they were happy to see someone "baroque" Marlowe and Kyd. After all, as I have said above, there is a fair bit of the comic in Richard III.
